Dear Data

My take on the experimental data collection and visualization project based on the data drawing project by Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec.

The method is to collect a weeks worth of data, then sketch a visualization to represent that data with varying levels of fidelity. The challenge is make sure to collect data at a high enough fidelity to give you options on how to represent that data in a visualization. The other challenge is the creating a visualization with in the constraints of a post card. Selecting what data to represent and discovering an interpretable representation is where creativity comes to play. Not all visualizations will be winners but the process of collecting and sketching data is a valuable learning experience.

The first series of images is a post card that represents a weeks worth of laughing data. I collected who I laughed at and who laughed at me along with the intensity of the laugh. I collected this data during the total lunar eclipse and was inspired by the imagery I was seeing on the news. I chose to represent days of the week in rows and laughs received and given in columns. Each laugh occurrence is represented by a hole punch and the intensity of the laugh is represented by the size of the hole opening. When holding the post card up to light, the intensity openings create lunar shapes.

Other data post cards represented include compliments v complaints and clothes worn during the week.
